Sepsis resolution to be adopted by the 70th World Health Assembly this week

The 70th World Health Assembly (WHA) is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland from 22 to 31 May, 2017 and thanks to the hard work of the Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA) and its partners, sepsis has made it onto the WHO health agenda.

Special mention to Dr Tex Kissoon, GSA vice president and a past president of WFPICCS, who has worked tirelessly in both functions to draw greater attention to the global burden of sepsis and the need for concerted action by a global body like WHO.

The resolution ‘Improving the prevention, diagnosis and management of sepsis’ was unanimously recommended by the WHO Executive Board for adoption by the WHA this week.

The resolution urges member states to adopt the 9 key actions and requests that the WHO:

  • draw attention to the public health impact of sepsis,
  • support Member States as appropriate,
  • collaborate with other organizations & relevant stakeholders  in enhancing access to quality, safe, efficacious and affordable types of treatments of sepsis, and infection prevention and control.
